North America’s Largest Fun Ride Event
The Complete Guide to TD FIVE BORO BIKE TOUR!

Held every May in New York, TD Five Boro Bike Tour (“TD” comes from the title sponsor, TD Bank) is one of the world’s most iconic urban fun ride events.
For one special day, Manhattan’s major avenues, highways, and even massive bridges—normally filled with traffic and blaring horns—are opened entirely to bicycles.
This is not a race.
It is an opportunity to experience New York City itself.
And that is precisely what makes the event so extraordinary.

FIVE BORO = Riding Through New York’s Five Boroughs

Manhattan

The heart of New York City and an area widely regarded as a symbol of global finance and culture.

Home to Wall Street, Times Square, Broadway, and countless museums, Manhattan’s skyline of soaring skyscrapers embodies the very image of “New York.”

At the same time, neighborhoods such as SoHo and Greenwich Village still preserve cobblestone streets and low-rise historic buildings, having long developed as centers of immigrant communities and art culture.

Another defining feature is how the vast greenery of Central Park adds a striking contrast to the surrounding urban landscape.

The Bronx

Located in the northern part of New York City, this borough is globally recognized as the birthplace of hip-hop culture.

From the street culture of the 1970s emerged hip-hop music, dance, and graffiti art, and the area still pulses with multicultural energy today.

The area is also famous as the home of Yankee Stadium, where a passionate sports culture thrives. Compared with Manhattan, it has more green space as well, with major attractions such as the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden spread throughout the borough.

Queens

The most ethnically and culturally diverse borough in New York City.

Communities from across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and beyond coexist here, making it a place often described as a “microcosm of the world.” The atmosphere shifts dramatically from one neighborhood to another.

Compared with Manhattan, the borough is characterized by quieter urban scenery, with more residential neighborhoods and parks than clusters of skyscrapers. It is also home to venues such as the US Open and Citi Field.

Brooklyn

One of the trendiest areas symbolizing contemporary New York culture.

Brooklyn has seen a wave of renovated factories and warehouses transformed into cafés, galleries, and craft breweries, establishing the borough as a hub for art, music, and fashion. The phrase “Brooklyn Made” has even become a brand of its own, associated with creativity and craftsmanship.

Neighborhoods such as Williamsburg and DUMBO are especially well known as creative districts, where brick-built streetscapes meet dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline.

Staten Island

The borough with the most suburban atmosphere in New York City, known for its abundance of nature and quieter pace of life.

Low-rise residential neighborhoods and expansive green spaces create a calm landscape completely different from the intensity of Manhattan. The views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline from the free Staten Island Ferry are among New York’s classic sightseeing experiences.

With a long history as a port city, traces of old shipbuilding and logistics culture still remain along the waterfront. In TD Five Boro Bike Tour, Staten Island also serves as the finish area, giving riders a special sense of accomplishment at the end of the long ride.

2. What Makes This Event So Unique?

Sixth Avenue without cars — a true “Zero-Car” New York scene.

(1) Ride Through a “Zero-Car” New York

The defining feature of TD Five Boro Bike Tour is the chance to experience a “car-free New York.” On event day, major roads across the city are closed on a massive scale, leaving the streets filled entirely with tens of thousands of cyclists.

The experience of cruising by bike along normally traffic-packed routes such as Sixth Avenue and the FDR Drive—roads usually dominated by taxis and delivery vehicles—is simply extraordinary. Riding between Manhattan’s skyscrapers without worrying about traffic lights or cars creates a sense of scale unlike any other urban ride event.

(2) A Celebration, Not a Competition

This event is a fun ride, not a race focused on finishing times. As a result, the variety of bicycles on the course is part of the attraction itself. Alongside road bikes, you’ll also see:

Cross bikes
Mini velos
Tandem bikes
Recumbents
Costume and custom-themed bikes

Many riders even bring speakers and cruise through the city playing their favorite music—from The Beatles to Queen

Many participants join with family and friends, treating the event as a leisure experience and a chance to enjoy New York together. Along the course, local residents cheer riders on while hosting live music performances, giving the entire city the atmosphere of a giant festival.

Among the participants are people riding to celebrate recovery from illness, as well as those creating memories with loved ones. More than anything, the event carries the feeling of “a ride that celebrates life.”

(3) Experience NYC as an “Architectural Sightseeing Ride”

TD Five Boro Bike Tour is also an irresistible experience for architecture lovers.

For example, in Manhattan, riders pass through streets lined with iconic skyscrapers and historic buildings that define New York’s urban landscape.

Riders pedal through the city while looking up at iconic New York skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building…

The route also passes in front of Radio City Music Hall, the grand theater celebrated as a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture.

In the park section, riders cruise through the greenery of Central Park…

in multicultural Queens, the route passes by The Noguchi Museum, created from the former studio of renowned Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi…

and in culture-rich Brooklyn, riders pass rows of low-rise brick buildings, streets lined with renovated former factories, and places such as Brooklyn Navy Yard, where the historic naval shipyard has been transformed into a lively hub of shops and food halls.

The route also features architectural landmarks too numerous to count, including St. Paul’s Chapel, founded in the 1700s, New York City Hall from the 1800s, countless examples of Art Deco and postmodern architecture, and the rebuilt skyline of Lower Manhattan after 9/11.

From elevated highways and bridges closed to traffic, riders can enjoy sweeping views of the city without worrying about cars, making the event one of the ultimate architectural sightseeing routes in New York.

3. TD Five Boro Bike Tour as a Leisure Fun Ride Event

The true appeal of this event goes far beyond simply riding a bike.

It creates a space where people from all walks of life gather with their own reasons and ride freely together. Alongside dedicated road cyclists, you’ll find casual riders, families, tourists, club teams, nonprofit organizations, and people simply enjoying a day of leisure.

Seeing all of these different riders sharing the same roads creates a scene that feels remarkably rich and vibrant.

(1) Brooklyn’s Vibrant Pub and Coffee Culture

Especially on the Brooklyn side, many former warehouse districts have been transformed into breweries and pubs, making it common to see riders stopping for a post-ride drink.

One popular stop among local riders is The Kent Ale House, a bar known for serving free beer after the ride on event day. If you’re planning to join in 2027, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Brooklyn Roasting Company, which also has locations in Japan, was packed with riders taking coffee breaks and recharging their devices. Being able to top up your battery mid-ride is definitely appreciated.

(2) The City’s Iconic Bridges

The route crosses four bridges while traveling through New York’s five boroughs:

Madison Avenue Bridge (Manhattan → Bronx)
Third Avenue Bridge (Bronx → Manhattan)
Queensboro Bridge (Manhattan → Queens)
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (Brooklyn → Staten Island)

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge waiting near the end of the course is the ride’s biggest challenge. Normally closed to bicycles, this massive highway bridge becomes an unforgettable experience as tens of thousands of riders cross it together.

Approaching the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

When it opened in 1964, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was said to be the longest bridge in the world, stretching approximately 4.2 km. Its gradual incline can unexpectedly drain your energy just before the finish—but the scenery carries you through.

As sea winds blow across the bridge and the Manhattan skyline appears in the distance, the feeling suddenly hits you: I really rode through New York.

(3) Returning to Manhattan by Ferry

After the finish, riders return to Manhattan aboard the free Staten Island Ferry. Bikes are naturally welcome on board, and the ferry terminal offers convenient access to the subway via South Ferry / Whitehall Street Station.

On the ride back, with views of the Statue of Liberty, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the day’s ride.

TD Five Boro Bike Tour is far more than just a cycling event—it is a journey through New York itself.

Riding through communities where cultures and identities intersect, surrounded by architecture, music, and urban culture, the experience feels less like a sporting event and more like taking part in a citywide festival. It is a fun ride that lets you experience the true spirit of a global metropolis.

The next edition is scheduled for Sunday, May 2, 2027.
See you in Manhattan.
