CYCLE MUSIC #14
RM
“Bicycle”

The column series “CYCLE MUSIC” introduces a little bicycle-related music each time. This time, I’d like to write about the solo track “Bicycle” by RM, the leader of the hugely popular South Korean group BTS, who is also a hip-hop MC, singer-songwriter, and producer. I’m sure many people know far more about BTS than I do, and I feel quite apologetic for not being very familiar with them. That said, I was deeply moved by this song, which was released as part of the “2021 BTS FESTA”. The track has a laid-back groove led by beautiful guitar cutting—something I’d even recommend to Free Soul fans. It carries a slightly melancholic and sentimental melody. The chorus refrain […]

The Story of a World Where Women Can’t Ride Bicycles

The interesting thing about movies is that they show us diverse worlds. The bloody history of the mafia. A war that happened on a distant star. The encounter between a hitman and a young girl. The life of a samurai at the end of the Edo period. A soldier in a desperate situation. A battle against a killer by the lakeside. Crossing borders, eras, and time, they bring us surprise and inspiration. **”Wadjda” (2012)** is a Saudi Arabian film (co-produced with Germany) that was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Venice International Film Festival. The director and screenwriter, Haifaa al-Mansour, is Saudi Arabia’s […]

Gravel Enthusiasts Ride Ancient Routes #01
~ Kii Mountain Range, Kumano Kodo, Off-Road ~

Hello, this is Onsen Tamago Negitoro. I was reminded of a conversation I had with a Spanish hiker when I cycled the Camino de Santiago in Spain before the pandemic. He asked me, ‘Have you been to the Kumano Kodo? You really should go!’ The ‘Camino de Santiago’ in Spain, the ‘Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage,’ and the ‘Kumano Kodo’ are all incredibly popular among hikers from abroad. While I had cycled the first two, I had never ridden through the Kumano Kodo or the Kii Peninsula. Despite its proximity to my hometown of Osaka, the rugged nature of the Kii Mountain Range has always made it feel far away. This time, I rode a route following the ancien […]

Livingston Taylor
“Don’t Let Me Lose This Dream”

The regular column “CYCLE MUSIC” delivers a short essay each time about bicycles and music. This time, I’d like to introduce the 1996 album “Bicycle” by folk singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor, whose gentle and heartwarming voice, along with his rich guitar sound, leave a lasting impression. Livingston Taylor, commonly known as “Liv”, is the third of five siblings from the famous Taylor musical family, which includes the renowned James Taylor, Kate Taylor, and Alex Taylor. Since releasing his self-titled debut album in 1970, he has consistently put out new works, and he has also been a professor at the prestigious Berklee College of Music since 1989. That being said, his music l […]
