Bungo Ono — A Sauna Town

While Oita is known for its hot springs, Bungo Ono stands out as the only municipality in the prefecture without a hot spring. Instead, it has gained attention as a “Town of Saunas,” offering a distinct approach to relaxation. The city also holds historical significance in Japan’s cycling scene, having hosted the All-Japan Road Race Championships in 2013.

This Year’s Course

The course has been designed to be gentle and beginner-friendly, making it accessible to participants of all fitness levels. While seasoned cyclists may find it less challenging, the focus remains on connecting with nature, local people, and personal rejuvenation.

Venue & Accommodation

The event will take place at Lodge Kiyokawa in Bungo Ono, a scenic retreat surrounded by natural beauty. The lodge offers accommodation and bicycle rentals for those traveling from afar.

Cycling the Ororon Line in Hokkaido
A Scenic Road Guide with Views of Mt. Rishiri

The Ororon Line is a breathtaking coastal route in northern Hokkaido along the Sea of Japan. Stretching all the way from Otaru to Wakkanai, its highlight lies in Route 106 between Teshio and Wakkanai. To the left, Mt. Rishiri rises majestically from the sea; to the right, the vast Sarobetsu Plain extends endlessly. With few sharp bends, the road runs straight toward the horizon, offering an exhilarating ride. This time, we’ll take on that very core section by bicycle. Text&Photo_Hokokara Table of Contents 1. Horonobe Station on the Sōya Main Line, reached from JR Asahikawa Station2. “Inexperienced rider at the Honolulu Century Ride 2023”

Two days after the event. I’m writing this while looking at the surfers off the coast of Wikiki Beach. It’s the best workcation. I wasn’t particularly interested in the southern islands, so I felt like, “Hawaii, huh?” But… Hawaii is amazing! I’m starting to understand why people keep saying that. Better late than never! I think it’s all thanks to completing the fan ride…

Tokyo old town bicycle stroll #01
Collecting “Goshuin” (temple or shrine stamps)  in the Yanesen area of oldtown Tokyo-Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi.

Nice to meet you. My name is Shitamachi Kombu, born and raised in the old town area of Tokyo. I’m what you might call a third-generation Edokko (it’s said that if you live in Tokyo for three generations, you’re considered an Edokko, while if you live in Yokohama for three days, you’re considered a Hamakko). In this column, I’ll be exploring the down-to-earth neighborhoods known as “Shitamachi” in Tokyo by rental bike and sharing the charm of these areas with you. Please enjoy these casual reports.
