A Refreshing 100-Mile Ride Through the Green Foothills of the Japanese Alps
— Azumino Century Ride 2026 (Part 1) —

On May 23, I took part in the Alps Azumino Century Ride (AACR), one of Japan’s most popular cycling events. Among the several course options, I chose the Cycle Train Route—a 120 km course that includes approximately 65 km of riding, with the remainder covered by train. As its name suggests, the AACR was inspired by the Honolulu Century Ride. After experiencing the event firsthand, Executive Committee Chair Raita Suzuki—a former Japanese Olympic mountain biker who represented Japan at the Sydney Olympics—returned home determined to create a similar event in his native Nagano. Since 2009, that vision has continued to grow into one of Japan’s premier fun rides. In addition to the cl […]

Traveling Around Oahu
A Day Trip You Can Enjoy Both On and Off the Bike!

With cherry blossom season being declared one after another across Japan, many of us are starting to think beyond spring outings and toward summer plans. At the same time, it’s understandable that some travelers may still feel cautious about going abroad. These days, as we gaze at the blossoms, we’re reminded that both travel and sport are privileges made possible by a peaceful world. This year’s Honolulu Century Ride (HCR) will take place on Sunday, September 27, following Japan’s Silver Week holidays (September 19–23). If you can manage an extended break, even better. The Global Ride editorial team recommends heading beyond Honolulu to the laid-back and distinctly local “North Shore” area— […]

On a crisp autumn day, a group of foreign cyclists arrived at Matsuyama Airport, each carrying a bike bag over their shoulder. They had come from Australia’s major cities—Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane—representing a diverse mix of media professionals, travel agency staff, and influencers. All had been invited to take part in Ehime’s now-annual press tour circling the prefecture. A glance at the itinerary revealed just how ambitious this year’s program would be. Alongside classics such as the Shimanami Kaido and the legendary UFO Line, the route included a major climb through the dramatic landscapes of the Shikoku Karst, a coastal ride along the rias shoreline of Nanyo, a tour of Cape Sada, and […]
