All Roads Lead to the Local Bike Shop
Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture

In this series, the Global Ride editorial team—connecting fun rides around the world—visits the local bike shops where cyclists gather. With an “all roads lead to the local bike shop” mindset, this time we travel to Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, approximately 230 kilometers northwest of Nihonbashi, Tokyo. Matsumoto is a historic castle town neighboring Azumino, home to the popular Azumino Century Ride, a cycling event renowned for its scenic routes through lush rice paddies and beneath the peaks of the Japanese Alps. * The Azumino Century Ride will be featured in a separate article. Editor’s M: What Should I Ride In?
〜Riding with an Aloha State of Mind〜

Hello, and welcome back. Early summer already seems to be in the air, and the rising temperatures have been making my head spin a little. I hope you’re doing well wherever you are. The first time I rode in Honolulu was in September 2023. Since then, I’ve only attended as a member of the media. Time and again, I found myself having the same exchange with riders: “Are you riding this year?”“I’m here to cover the event.”“Why not ride while you’re covering it?” Fair point. Maybe I should. That thought was lingering in the back of my mind when I recently took part in my second TD Five Boro Bike Tour, a ride of about 65 km. What struck me most was how many new things I noticed on a cou […]

From environmental values to cycling gear — rooted in philosophy. The term “sustainable development” was coined during international conferences in the 1980s, eventually leading to the adoption of the “SDGs” by the United Nations in 2015. A decade on, even Japan—once slow to adapt—is finding that “eco-friendly” has become such a given, it’s almost a dead phrase. Today’s buzzwords have shifted from “sustainable” to “regenerative,” calling for an even deeper commitment. In a time when the planet is in crisis, consumer goods are overflowing, and the waste we see around us is overwhelming, the desire to say “But I still want to enjoy life” or “I still want to ride my bike!” resonates more than e […]

Editor M’s “Feeling Kinda Hawaii…🌺”
Major & Alternative Spots to Enjoy During Your Stay in Honolulu

As early summer vibes start to make their way across Japan, I can’t help but think of Hawaii—especially after covering the Honolulu Century Ride. There’s just something about that place… Don’t you think Hawaii has a way of resetting you, just by being there? Sure, fancy restaurants and lively shopping can be fun, but one of Hawaii’s greatest charms is how simply spending a day there can lift your spirits and make you feel light and free. That said, I want to hike up mountains, swim in the ocean, go on a fun ride, and eat at delicious restaurants too.I mean, it is Hawaii, after all! (Can’t have it both ways, huh?) Registration is now open for the Honolulu Century Ride, which takes you through […]

Editor M’s laid-back architectural sightseeing ride at Bike New York

I took part in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour held in New York on May 5, 2024! The weather that day was far from ideal. At the start, the temperature was just 10°C, with winds around 20 km/h—freezing cold—and heavy gray clouds overhead. Still, considering the forecast had shown a 91% chance of rain up until the day before, it almost felt lucky that it wasn’t pouring from the morning. Even layered in long-sleeve jerseys, the cold was relentless, and I was still shivering despite wearing a rain jacket. Hoping the ride itself would eventually warm me up, I first headed to Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan to pick up my rental bike. As fierce sea winds swept through before sunrise, I cou […]
