This is the second installment in our series featuring trip notes from riders participating in the Honolulu Century Ride 2025.Our guest this time is Kinuyo, a passionate cyclist who has joined the HCR many times and loves Hawaii so much that she often visits with her family. As a tour support staff member for Tobu Top Tours, she is admired by many riders for her wealth of cycling knowledge and warm communication.Every year, she rides the full HCR course on her road bike—but this year, she decided, “I want to ride with my daughters!” Her plan: to place her 7-year-old on the back seat of an e-bike and have her 12-year-old pedal on her own. Joined by her husband, who would tackle the full round […]

Major & Alternative Spots to Enjoy During Your Stay in Honolulu

As early summer vibes start to make their way across Japan, I can’t help but think of Hawaii—especially after covering the Honolulu Century Ride. There’s just something about that place… Don’t you think Hawaii has a way of resetting you, just by being there? Sure, fancy restaurants and lively shopping can be fun, but one of Hawaii’s greatest charms is how simply spending a day there can lift your spirits and make you feel light and free. That said, I want to hike up mountains, swim in the ocean, go on a fun ride, and eat at delicious restaurants too.I mean, it is Hawaii, after all! (Can’t have it both ways, huh?) Registration is now open for the Honolulu Century Ride, which takes you through […]

Interview with Travis Counsell
“Making Hawaii a Place Where Everyone Can Enjoy a Cycling Life”

On Sunday, September 29th, the 41st edition of the Honolulu Century Ride (HCR) came to a close. While chatting with many of the participating riders, the GR editorial team received this question from a few people: “What kind of organization is behind such an amazing ride event?” With that in mind, we conducted an interview with Travis Counsell, Executive Director of the organizing body, the Hawaii Bicycling League, and an avid cyclist himself. We also received a message from him for all participants, so please read on! GR Editorial Team (hereafter GR): Could you give us an overview of the event? For Those Who Want to Enjoy Honolulu Even More

The Honolulu Century Ride has just wrapped up for this year. Following last year, it was another fulfilling day filled with breathtaking views and unexpected encounters. Many HCR participants seem to return home on flights either the night after the event or the following day. However, I hope you’ll make the most of every last moment in Honolulu. That’s why I’m here to share some exclusive tips I’ve gathered myself as GR Communication Director, just for you. First, let me introduce the Highway Inn, a spot serving authentic Hawaiian food located in the SALT complex of the Kakaʻako district, which I’ve mentioned in another article. It’s about 6 kilometers from Waikīkī, roughly […]

Oahu is ten times more enjoyable by bicycle.

This is Daisaku Kawase, Global Ride’s Communication Director, currently staying on Oahu as the Honolulu Century Ride (HCR) approaches once again this year. Oahu, the host island of the event, offers so much more than just Waikiki — it’s home to many charming and vibrant neighborhoods. If you’ve made it all the way to Hawaii, it would be a shame not to explore beyond the usual spots! I highly recommend Kailua, located on Oahu’s eastern coast. It’s about 40 kilometers from Waikiki if you follow the scenic coastal route. Kailua is home to the second aid station of the HCR and holds strong ties to former President Obama. It’s also a charming beach town filled with stylish shops. Whil […]

Honolulu is ten times more enjoyable by bicycle.

The Honolulu Century Ride (HCR) is just around the corner again this year! The 100 mile (160 km) course, filled with ups and downs, is an absolute thrill. But since you’re already in Honolulu, you’ll want to make the most of the city as well, right? That’s why I suggest exploring the city by bicycle. A light 10 km ride will help shake off the fatigue from the long flight, allow you to get used to riding on the right side of the road, and help you feel more confident heading into the HCR. Even if you’re just visiting Hawaii for sightseeing, there’s more to the city than Waikiki and Ala Moana Center. By hopping on a bike, you can enjoy the real Honolulu. Share bikes, which ar […]
