Bungo Ono — A Sauna Town

While Oita is known for its hot springs, Bungo Ono stands out as the only municipality in the prefecture without a hot spring. Instead, it has gained attention as a “Town of Saunas,” offering a distinct approach to relaxation. The city also holds historical significance in Japan’s cycling scene, having hosted the All-Japan Road Race Championships in 2013.

This Year’s Course

The course has been designed to be gentle and beginner-friendly, making it accessible to participants of all fitness levels. While seasoned cyclists may find it less challenging, the focus remains on connecting with nature, local people, and personal rejuvenation.

Venue & Accommodation

The event will take place at Lodge Kiyokawa in Bungo Ono, a scenic retreat surrounded by natural beauty. The lodge offers accommodation and bicycle rentals for those traveling from afar.

Why Ride in Hawaii? First-Time Participants, Part 1

Honolulu Century Ride (HCR) is the largest cycling event in Hawaii. But don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s just for avid cyclists. It’s a special gathering place for people who, from the moment they step off the plane, feel that “Hawaii’s here! CYCLE MUSIC #03
Corinne Bailey Rae
“Put Your Records On”

Alongside “My Ever Changing Moods” by The Style Council, which I introduced in the first installment of this column two months ago, one of the most memorable music videos featuring cycling that comes to mind is “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae, the singer-songwriter born in Leeds, UK, in 1979. I can’t forget the fresh excitement I felt the first time I watched this music video. It was reminiscent of the bittersweet feeling I experienced when I watched early short films by François Truffaut (his films often feature memorable bicycle scenes) during my younger days.

Riverside Ride in Greenery Countryside

Now that we have traversed almost the entirety of the northwest coastal roads, let’s take a look inland at one of the multitude of routes crisscrossing the heart the prefecture, Okuiyo-Hijikawa River Cycling Course. Since it is still summer and as hot as ever, I chose a relatively leisurely ride following a meandering river from the mountains near the border to Kochi Prefecture to a familiar port town I passed through during my last ride; an almost exclusively downhill valley cruise leading to the sea. If you’re looking for a little more exercise, simply start at Nagahama Port and make your way up the valley from there. Table of Contents 1. Starting from Kishimojin(the Goddess of Childbirth […]
