Bungo Ono — A Sauna Town

While Oita is known for its hot springs, Bungo Ono stands out as the only municipality in the prefecture without a hot spring. Instead, it has gained attention as a “Town of Saunas,” offering a distinct approach to relaxation. The city also holds historical significance in Japan’s cycling scene, having hosted the All-Japan Road Race Championships in 2013.

This Year’s Course

The course has been designed to be gentle and beginner-friendly, making it accessible to participants of all fitness levels. While seasoned cyclists may find it less challenging, the focus remains on connecting with nature, local people, and personal rejuvenation.

Venue & Accommodation

The event will take place at Lodge Kiyokawa in Bungo Ono, a scenic retreat surrounded by natural beauty. The lodge offers accommodation and bicycle rentals for those traveling from afar.

For my first column, I’d like to introduce a wine along with a memorable cycling episode from one of the visits. In 2011, at the peak of the harvest season, I was barely given permission to visit “Dard et Ribo” in the Rhône region of France. It’s a winery run by François Ribo and René-Jean Dard.
